When the $40K No-limit Hold’em Tournament was added to the list of events to be held during 2009’s WSOP, Commissioner Jeffery Pollack was concerned it may overshadow the main event. When many agreed it would not, there was much anticipation that only well known stars would emerge during the 3rd event, to much surprise, an unknown online player took the title.
Online Poker’s bright young stars, Russian’s own Vitaly Lunkin, after surviving a grueling tournament against some of pokers biggest names was victorious. Lunkin emerged the winner defeating American Isaac Haxton and taking home a beautiful prize of over $1.8 million dollars. “This was the toughest tournament of my life. It was a game, but also a very hard job” said Lunkin with the help of a translator.
Lunkin withstood pros such as, 2004 WSOP champ Greg Raymer, 5-time bracelet winner Ted Forrest, Dani Stern, Justin Bonomo, and Alec Torelli, all online young stars. Isaac Haxton, who entered heads-up with the chip lead seemed as through he would take the victory especially after beating Lunkin’s pocket aces. However, losing three large pots before running into Lunkin’s second pair of aces, Haxton was not so lucky. Haxton still took home a nice $1.1 million for second place.
It has been reported that Lunkin’s and Haxton’s heads-up battle will certainly make for some great televised poker. In addition to creating memorable television, Greg Raymer commented, “The thing I liked most about these kids I played with, is that they were all nice guys. Sometimes these kids from online are cocky and arrogant, but none were that type. Even Vitaly played as a gentleman and I would be glad to call any of these nice young men my friends. The fans will happy to know that finally nice guys did finish last.”
