WSOP Event #5 lasted two days, a $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha Tournament turned up 809 entries, the largest in history, only made one victorious and it wasn’t Internet megastar, Steven “PiKappRaider” Burkholder. Jason Mercier, with a 14 month young career on the live circuit, took home the Bracelet and the prize of $237,415.00 in cash.
Mercier taking a huge chip lead during day 1, continued to chip up in day 2, until Burkholder took nearly half of his stack later that day. That one hand was said to be the largest pot of the tournament. After the two eliminated other online greats and both bracelet winners Alioto and Tran, they continued in heads-up play.
During the final hand, both Burkholder and Mercier held trip jacks. Burkholder had the higher kicker, and on the turn, Mercier was given a queen and eventually the win. Mercier, a Ft. Lauderdale FL native is only 22 years old and already holds titles to five tournaments in live arenas. His career winning have now accumulated to over $3 Million dollars.
Mercier went on to comment, “Winning always feels good. It feels so good to win a gold bracelet so early in the series, especially after my 2008 tournament experience did not go so well. Every time I enter a tournament I think I can win it, but of coarse you have to win some key pots.”
