The WSOP Event #24, $1500 No-Limit Hold’em, took place this past week just finishing yesterday June 13th, 2009. At 11:32 pm Saturday, only one remained, Pete Vilandos as he pounded his chest and thrust his up arms in the air, winning the coveted bracelet and $607,256.
Some head’s up play lasts hours, but the battle between Vilandos and online sensation Andy “BKiCe” Seth only lasted about 45 minutes. However, Vilandos had to survive 2,505 players to get to this point and in a race between AK and AQ, made a crucial turn the head’s up battle for this distinguished gentleman.
This is Vilandos’ 2nd bracelet, the first was won back in 1995, a short 14 yrs ago. In these last 14 years, he has made the last 30 of every WSOP tournament entered except 3. It is unsure of Pete “The Greek” Vilandos’ age, but even 14 years ago, he was probably older than his 2nd place finisher, Andy “BKiCe” Seth, who is only 22 yrs old.
When day 3 started only 19 players remained, Vilandos was one of the players with the shortest stack, only 325K and Seth, was the chip leader by a few with a commanding 1.4M in chips. By the time there were only six players left, Vilandos had a lead over 1M of Seth.
As both Vilandos and Seth took command of the table, each knocking out 2 players like Alan Jaffray in 6th place ($105,699), Dean Hamrick in 5th ($132,380), Glenn McCaffrey in 4th place ($176,165), and last but not least Michael Greco in 3rd (248,855).
Finally down to the two Vilandos and Seth. Both had amazing chips counts in front of them, over 5 million, less than 500K separating them. Andy Seth was starting to chip away at Pete Vilandos until they both received great head’s up hands. Seth, holding As Qh and Vilandos, holding Ah Ks, they both are all-in, what a scary race. The board gave neither any help, but in the end Vilandos had the higher card, leaving Seth down to only 2M in chips verses Vilandos incredible 9M in chips.
After about 15 minutes of play, Vilandos held an Ah 5c, while Seth held an As Jc and raised to 700K. Pete quickly and quietly announced his all-in and Andy excitedly called. It must have been Vilandos’ night, because a straight came out for him to the turn and there was absolutely no help or way for Seth.
It was said about Andy “BKiCe” Seth that “he was one of the class acts throughout this tournament. Most importantly, we would love to have him back and his time is coming soon” a spokesperson for the WSOP organization. “We congratulate Pete Vilandos on his 2nd bracelet. It is better 14 yrs later, than never.”
